Frozen Fruit and Yogurt Popsicle Bites

Why is this a survival recipe?

I always have frozen fruit, and I always have yogurt,  and one summer night I decided to put them together and place them in the freezer.

What resulted was lovely individual fruit and yogurt pops that I could store for about a week in my freezer and eat whenever I wanted. This is a delicious snack and it tastes just like ice cream without having to buy a whole pint of it.

If you have a Gluten Allergy, make sure all of your products and brands are gluten free.

Ingredients:

  • For a whole tray, use 3 individual Yogurts
  • 16 grapes/berries
  • Toothpicks

Step one: Using a spoon, fill your ice-cube compartments with yogurt

Step three: Using the back of the spoon, smooth over the yogurt.

Step four: Poke your toothpick into the fruit and freeze for about an hour.

Sugary Fresh Berries

Why is this a survival recipe?

The real name for sugar berries is macerated berries, which basically means letting berries absorb sugar to become sweet, juicy, and succulent.

The great thing about sugar berries is how versatile they are. You can use them in desserts like parfaits, or in breakfasts like with buttermilk pancakes and whipped cream.

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Berries
  • 1 tsp of Sugar

Step one: Mix the sugar and berries well together; refrigerate for 15-20 minutes and serve

Fresh and Clean Fruit Salad

Why is this a survival recipe?

Fresh fruit is the original fast food. Fruit salads are simple, but very versatile and incredibly easy to put together and to make in advance.

Knowing when to slice up your fruit is crucial to a perfect fruit salad. For example, when you’re using bananas, wait until they are just starting to get brown spots on the peel and that’s when you know they’re ready to eat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small Banana, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup of Blueberries, washed and drained
  • 1 cup of Strawberries, washes, sliced, and drained
  • 1 cup of Raspberries, washed and drained

Step one: Wash, drain and slice your fruits

Strawberry and Banana Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Frosting

Why is this a survival recipe?

Baking a cake from a box doesn’t have to be lifeless, dry, and boring. By adding in the delicious classic butter-cream frosting that you can find on any sugar box, some deliciously fresh fruit and a little love, you’re sure to bake a perfect cake.

Ingredients:

 

  • 1 box of moist Chocolate Cake mix
  • 6 large Strawberries
  • 1/2 medium Banana
  • 3-3/4 cup of Sugar
  • 1/2 cup of Butter
  • 3-2 tbsp Milk
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract

For the Butter Cream Frosting:

Step one: In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, butter, milk and vanilla until creamy; set aside

For the Cake:

Step one: Prepare your cake as directed on the package; this should make two layers. Allow the cake layers to cool completely, or it will melt your frosting.

Step two: Cover the top of the first layer thinly with your butter cream frosting

Step three: Slice five out of six of your strawberries into thin pieces , and slice your banana into thin slices; place your fruit evenly on the butter cream frosted cake layer

Step Four: Frost your second layer, then place it frosting side down on top of the first

Step Five: Frost the entire cake using a butter knife, and place your final strawberry in the center of your cake!

Decadent Dark Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

Why is this a survival recipe?

I’m never paying outrageous prices for one delectable strawberry ever again when I can make them right in my dorm room in droves, and neither should you. Chocolate dipped strawberries are fresh and delicious and I love to have them with hot coffee and my books after dinner.

If you have a Gluten Allergy, make sure all of your products and brands are gluten free.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz of PURE dark chocolate
  • 4-6 Strawberries

Step one: Break up you chocolate and place into a glass bowl. Put a little water into a pan and suspend your glass bowl over the water. Make sure the bowl isn’t in the actual water. Turn the heat up until the chocolate melts, stirring gently

Step two: After the chocolate is melted, take your strawberry by the leaf and twist it in the chocolate. Do this process for each strawberry. This must be done quickly or else the chocolate may burn. If necessary, turn down the heat.

Flourless Creamy Peanut Butter Cookies

Why is this a survival recipe?

This cookie has a rich, creamy peanut butter flavor and is perfect with tea. You only need four ingredients that you always have in your kitchen anyway, which means you always have cookies ready to be devoured.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Peanut Butter
  • 1/2 cup of Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • Optional: Dark Chocolate Chips

Step one: Preheat your oven to 350; mix together the peanut butter and the sugar until combined.

Homemade Vanilla Whipped Cream

Making your own fresh whipped cream is so easy. It’s three simple steps and it can be used in so many desserts, or even with breakfast with on your yummy buttermilk pancakes or traditional french toast.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Heavy Cream
  • Sugar to taste
  • Splash of Vanilla Extract

Step one: With a hand-mixer, whip the cream on low

Toffee Crunch Cookies

Why is this a survival recipe?

I’m a sucker for cookies and tea, an making your own cookies is actually very easy. You have all of the ingredients in your kitchen already, because most of them are staples.

In baking, the measurements are important, but once you get the hang of it making cookies is a breeze. I added toffee bites to my cookies, but you can add whatever fun treats you have in your pantry to make these cookies satisfy your sweet tooth cravings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 sticks of Butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Packed Light Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1 cup Toffee Crunch Bits

Step one: Preheat your oven to 375; in a small bowl combine flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well

Step two: In a larger bowl, beat your butter, both sugars, and the vanilla extract together until creamy

Step three: After the mixture is creamy, add one egg at a time to the liquid mixture, beating the mixture until fully combined

Step five: Form one rounded TBSP of your cookie dough and form it into a ball. Place on a piece of parchment paper, 2 inches apart from each other.

Two Step Fudgey-Brownie Pie

Why is this a survival recipe?

Usually baking pies is an art, a science, and a challenge: well, not this pie. It’s only two simple steps, and if you can pre-heat an oven, you can make this pie.

I make these for holidays and special occasions, because I almost always have the ingredients readily available in my kitchen. It’s fast, easy, and absolutely delicious.

Ingredients:

  • 1 9 in Pie Crust
  • 1 package of your favorite Brownie Mix, made Fudge-like

Step one: Preheat your oven to temperature directed on your brownie mix and prepare your brownie mix as directed. Pour your mix into the pie crust and bake according to the time on the Brownie package.

Rustic Apple Tart

Why is this a survival recipe?

This recipe guarantees a crisp, flavorful apple tart that you can easily turn into an a-la-mode dessert. It’s perfectly balanced and incredibly easy to make.

If you’ve made apple pie before, you know how finicky it can be. Well this apple tart has room for *ahem* improvement, lets say. You have a bit of wiggle room with this easy recipe, so if you love spices, kick it up a notch and don’t worry about ruining your dessert with a measuring error.

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen pie crust, thawed
  • 2 fuji apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 rounded tbsp of sugar
  • 1 tsp of lemon juice
  • 1/4 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp of nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp of butter or butter substitute 
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tsp of flour, plus dusting for crust

Step one: Preheat oven to 425. Flour your surface, then roll out your pie crust with a rolling pin, lay on cookie sheet

Step two: Peel and slice your apples, squeeze in your lemon juice and add in your spices

Step four: Place your apple mixture in the center of the pie crust, dot with butter
